| The finest works of art are precious, among other reasons, because they make it possible for us to know , if only imperfectly and for a little while, what it actually feels like to think subtly and feel nobly.

What interests me in a painting.
I look first for an overall balance, a wholeness, where everything works in harmony. The colour may be fresh or it may be moody. Marks are different in size, in texture, movement and suggestion.
I start at the edges , where introductory remarks are made. Here one enters, travels through and exits. It is at the edges that the rest of the world begins ,or ends. For paintings like mine, where the act of painting is the raison d’etre, paintings succeed or they fail at the edges.
When I am looking at a painting, I am not looking to identify things, or for answers. I am looking for delight. I am looking for character in marks that only a hand can make. I am looking for pleasure and I want it to last.
