Ray Cattell was born in Birmingham, England in 1921. He studied at the Birmingham College of Art then served in the Royal Navy from 1940 to 1946. After continuing his studies in Birmingham, he worked as a graphic designer and Art Director in London.

In 1954, he moved to Toronto, Canada, and since 1963 has continually exhibited in society shows and one man exhibitions including the Pollock Gallery, Toronto (1963), Gallery Moos, Toronto (1965, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1982, 1984), Flint Institute of Fine Arts, Michigan (1965), Kensington Gallery, Calgary (1967, 1971, 1977), Arwin Galleries, Detroit (1969, 1972, 1976, 1979), Drian Galleries, London, England (1972, 1974, 1980), Compendium Galleries, Birmingham, England (1973), Wells Gallery, Ottawa (1973), Wallack Galleries, Ottawa (1978, 1981), Roberts Gallery, Toronto (1995), Moore Gallery, Toronto (1998).

Ray Cattell has won a number of awards and prizes including the Water Colour Award at the Toronto 3rd Outdoor Show in 1963, the Honour Award at the Royal Canadian Academy in 1964 and the Hadassah Prize in 1965. In 1966, he won the Baxter Purchase Award, and the Hadassah Prize again in 1967. In 1965, 1970, 1972 and 1975, Ray Cattell won the prestigious Honour Award of the Canadian Society of Painters In Watercolour, and in 1977, he was president of that society.

Ray Cattell is a member of the Ontario Society of Artists, The Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour, and the Royal Canadian Academy of Art. His work can be found in numerous collections both private and public, including the Arts & Letters Club, Toronto, the London Art Museum, the Saskatchewan Art Gallery, Crown Life Insurance, Dow Canada, Gulf Oil Canada, Sarnia Art Gallery, Shell Canada, International Nickel Company, University of Toronto, University of Alberta and Western University.
